| Abstract | This study investigates the role of Societal Segmentation and Household size in shaping educational status among different social groups in the Attappady region of Kerala. Attappady, a tribal-dominated hilly area in Palakkad district, presents significant socio-economic challenges where Scheduled Tribes (ST) and Scheduled Castes (SC) experience persistent educational disadvantages. The study aims to analysed variations in educational status across social groups (ST, SC, OBC, and General), examined the relationship between household size and education, and assessed how household size influences educational inequality. A cross-sectional survey of 384 households was conducted using simple random sampling, and data on social group, household size, and educational status were collected via a structured questionnaire. Data were analysed using SPSS, employing Kruskal–Wallis H tests, Spearman’s rank correlation, stratified Kruskal–Walli’s analysis, and Chi-square tests. Results revealed significant differences in education status among social groups, with ST households being the most disadvantaged. While household size alone showed no significant correlation with educational attainment (ρ = 0.064, p = 0.209), stratified analysis demonstrated that larger households, particularly among ST and SC groups, have lower educational status, whereas medium-sized households (3–5 members) perform better. The study highlights that educational inequality in Attappady is influenced by both social group and household size, emphasizing the need for targeted interventions such as scholarships, residential schooling, and community-based educational programs to promote inclusive education. |
