Impact of illegal Migration on Indias Position in International Relations: A Case Study of India - Bangladesh Border

Author(s) Ms. Deepti Yadav
Country India
Abstract Illegal migration across the India–Bangladesh border has emerged as a significant issue shaping India’s position in international relations, particularly with Bangladesh. This case study examines how cross-border migration influences bilateral diplomacy, internal security, and regional stability.

The persistent inflow of undocumented migrants has created tensions over sovereignty, border management, and demographic concerns in India. It has led to political sensitivities, periodic diplomatic strains, and policy responses such as stricter border fencing and surveillance. At the same time, India must balance security concerns with humanitarian considerations and maintain cooperative relations with Bangladesh, which remains a crucial partner in trade, connectivity, and regional cooperation.
