Abstract Tourism is one of the most dynamic sectors contributing significantly to the economic growth of hilly regions like Kumaon in Uttarakhand. This research aims to study the role of tourism in the economic development of the Kumaon division, with special reference to the Nainital district. Based on data from local stakeholders, entrepreneurs, and workers engaged in tourism-related occupations, the study explores tourism’s impact on employment, income generation, and regional development. The findings reveal that tourism serves as a major source of livelihood, reducing dependence on agriculture and minimizing out migration. However, issues like over-tourism, environmental degradation, and seasonal unemployment persist. The paper concludes by emphasizing the need for sustainable and community-driven tourism to ensure balanced growth in Nainital and other parts of Kumaon.
