| Abstract | This paper examines Mahesh Dattani's Seven Steps Around the Fire, focusing on its intricate exploration of gender dynamics, silence, and identity. Through an analytical lens, it articulates how Dattani's characters navigate a patriarchal society that marginalizes their voices and complexities. Central to this discussion is the character of Aditi, whose internal struggles reflect the broader societal constraints placed upon women, emphasizing the theme of silence as a form of resistance and survival. Additionally, the inclusion of a transgender character challenges conventional gender binaries, inviting a redefinition of identity that transcends traditional cultural narratives. By situating the play within its socio-cultural context, the study reveals how Dattani not only critiques rigid gender roles and expectations but also highlights the fluidity of identity in the face of societal norms. Ultimately, the paper underscores the importance of amplifying marginalized voices, advocating for a more inclusive discourse on gender and identity that resonates with contemporary challenges. The findings suggest that Dattani's work remains a vital contribution to the discourse surrounding identity and representation in modern society. |
