A Qualitative Study of University Students’ Attitudes Toward Telehealth and Face-to-Face Mental Health Support

Author(s) Ms. Sneha Chand
Country India
Abstract This study explores how Indian university students from non-psychology backgrounds perceive tele-mental health compared to face-to-face therapy. Using a qualitative, interpretivist approach, semi-structured interviews were conducted with students aged 18–25 across India and analyzed through thematic analysis. Findings highlight contextual decision-making, where students choose between telehealth and in-person therapy based on personal needs and circumstances. Tele-mental health was valued for its convenience, affordability, and reduced stigma, while face-to-face therapy was preferred for stronger emotional connection, trust, and perceived effectiveness. The study suggests that hybrid mental health services may best address student needs by balancing accessibility with relational depth. It also emphasizes the importance of culturally sensitive approaches in improving help-seeking behaviors among Indian students.
