The Synthesis of History and Sentiment in Anandamath

| Abstract | This paper presents a multidisciplinary analysis of Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay’s seminal novel, Anandamath (1882), examining the intersection between 18th-century historical realities and the construction of 19th-century nationalist sentiment. By synthesizing English translations of the text with primary British colonial records—including the correspondence of Warren Hastings and the historiography of W.W. Hunter—this study explores how the Great Bengal Famine of 1770 and the Sanyasi-Fakir Rebellion were re-imagined as catalysts for Indian independence. The research highlights the novel's role in personifying the land through the hymn Vande Mataram, shifting the resistance from a localized economic struggle to a divine mission. Furthermore, it addresses the "strategic paradox" of the novel’s conclusion, arguing that Bankim’s apparent concession to British rule was a necessary survival tactic under the Vernacular Press Act of 1878. Ultimately, the paper demonstrates how Anandamath successfully transformed marginalized "banditti" into a disciplined national vanguard, providing a spiritual and historical blueprint for the Indian independence movement. |
