Abstract Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a prevalent chronic gastrointestinal disorder traditionally attributed to acid reflux and lower esophageal sphincter dysfunction. Emerging evidence suggests that psychological stress significantly modulates symptom perception, disease severity, and treatment responsiveness through brain–gut axis mechanisms. This review aimed to synthesize current mechanistic and clinical evidence linking stress and GERD.
Keywords Gastroesophageal reflux disease, psychological stress, brain–gut axis, visceral hypersensitivity, autonomic dysfunction, proton pump inhibitor resistance
