Violence Intervention and State Failure: Lessons from Somalia and Afghanistan

Author(s) Ms. Olivia M. Pfaff
Country United Kingdom
Abstract Dominant international relations frameworks fail to account for post-colonial realities, often obscuring the mechanisms and human consequences of state collapse. Through a comparative analysis of Somalia and Afghanistan, this study argues that external interventions are constitutive of, rather than incidental to, state failure by prioritizing geopolitical containment over institutional capacity and generating catastrophic human security outcomes.
Keywords Securitization, state failure, empirical statehood, juridical statehood, Somalia, Afghanistan, human security, intervention, postcolonialism, monopoly of violence
