Northeast Region and Its Dependent Economy: Underlining the Major Challenges Towards Development

| Abstract | The North-Eastern Region (NER) of India reflects a structurally dependent regional economy characterized by weak industrialisation, limited manufacturing capacity, and heavy reliance on other Indian states for manufactured goods, food grains, pharmaceuticals, construction materials, and technical services. Using dependency theory, this paper examines how geographical isolation, inadequate infrastructure, low export participation, and fiscal dependence reinforce the region’s peripheral economic position. The study highlights the resulting market vulnerabilities, including supply disruptions, price instability, and constrained regional growth. It concludes that strengthening industrial infrastructure, regional production, connectivity, and human capital development is essential for achieving sustainable and self-reliant economic development in Northeast India. |
