| Abstract | This research paper analyzes the status and role of small and cottage industries in employment generation and socio-economic transformation in the rural economy of Etawah district, Uttar Pradesh. Based on a primary survey of 200 families across five development blocks (Jaswantnagar, Bharthana, Saifai, Chakarnagar, and Takha), the study evaluates five key dimensions: employment creation, women’s empowerment, income stability, migration trends, and government support. Quantitative analysis using mean scores, standard deviation, percentage agreement, and Chi-square tests reveals that small and cottage industries have played a highly significant role in local employment generation (mean > 4.0) and women’s empowerment (mean up to 4.34). However, the impact on economic stability is moderate (mean ~3.7), and government support remains limited and uneven (mean ~3.1). The study concludes that while these industries are powerful tools for rural development, region-specific policies and improved institutional support are necessary for sustainable impact. |
