Political Polarization and the Growth of Violent Democracy in India

Author(s) Dr. Jyotiprakash Palei
Country India
Abstract This paper examines the increasing political polarization in India and its contribution to the emergence of violent democratic practices. Indian democracy has long been regarded as one of the world’s largest and most vibrant democratic systems, characterized by electoral participation, political diversity, and constitutional governance. However, in recent years, the nature of democratic engagement has undergone significant transformation due to rising ideological divisions, identity politics, communal mobilization, hate speech, misinformation, and aggressive political competition. These developments have intensified political conflicts and contributed to electoral violence, social unrest, and democratic instability.
The paper analyses the causes, dimensions, and consequences of political polarization in India, focusing on the role of political parties, media, social media platforms, and electoral strategies. It also examines how polarization has weakened democratic tolerance, encouraged hostility among political supporters, and reduced the scope for constructive democratic dialogue. Through contemporary examples and electoral case studies, the paper highlights the gradual shift from peaceful democratic participation to conflict-oriented political mobilization.
The study argues that violent democratic tendencies threaten constitutional morality, public trust, and national unity. It further emphasizes the need for institutional reforms, electoral transparency, responsible media practices, civic education, and ethical political leadership to strengthen democratic culture and maintain peaceful political participation in India.
Keywords Political Polarization, Violent Democracy, Electoral Violence, Indian Politics, Democratic Stability, Identity Politics, Political Conflict.
