Recycling Aesthetics: A Case Study of Waste-Based Public Art in Waste to Wonder Park (Delhi)

Author(s) Ashlesha Komajwar
Country India
Abstract This article examines how waste can be transformed into useful public art as was done in the Waste to Wonder Park. The research delves at the ways in which monumental installations made of recycled and salvaged materials reimagine world-famous landmarks in a way that promotes sustainability and environmental consciousness. Located in a public park, the park serves as an example of how public space art can be used to raise awareness and promote discussion on environmental concerns, social justice and community building.
A methodological approach is used through site observation, visual and spatial analysis, audience engagement investigation, to analyse the effect of the works as the base to know the public consciousness and the Urban identity. The focus of the research is on whether the use of materials for reuse alters people's attitude toward waste and how old materials can become a beautiful cultural object. Expanding the exhibits' communicative reach, it delves deeper into the function of public engagement, photography, and social media engagement.
Re-inventing the creative materiality and bridging the gap between art, society and environment are two possible fruits from public art using waste material as resources. It effectively demonstrates how modern public art can motivate sustainability, be culturally inclusive and raise awareness of the environment by transforming spectators into action takers in urban environments.
