Abstract Carotid space lesions pose diagnostic challenges due to their diverse causes and clinical features. This article critically reviews the anatomy of the carotid space and highlights the range of pathologies within this complex region, demonstrated by the case studies. These cases were examined using ultrasonography (USG), computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Schwannomas appeared heterogeneously hypodense on plain CT and partly hyperdense on contrast-enhanced CT (CECT), with displacement of nearby vessels. Vagal-origin schwannomas caused anteromedial displacement of the internal carotid artery. Paragangliomas were usually homogeneously hyperdense on CECT and, when originating from the carotid body, showed lateral displacement of the internal carotid artery. This overview improves clinical knowledge and diagnostic precision, thereby supporting better patient outcomes in the management of carotid space lesions.
Keywords Schwannoma, carotid body tumour, paraganglioma, squamous cell carcinoma, carotid space lesion.
