Author(s) Dr. Chona V Cayabat

Abstract This paper assessed the integration of the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Index (GCI) into the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs of companies in the Philippines. Primarily, this study used a descriptive-comparative research design which involved 97 managers who are members of League of Corporate Foundations. Surveyed respondents the extent to which the twelve GCI Pillar influence companies strategic planning. Data unveils that companies in the country “never” integrate GCI annual ratings as basis for their CSR programs and initiatives as reflected in the overall mean of 1.2395. CSR initiatives primarily focused on traditional community development and other related activities. The paper also revealed other setbacks hindering GCI integration. Among its notable data is the high volume of projects requests from local stakeholders and the frequent use of CSR as a branding and reputation management tool. Further analysis demonstrates significant differences in GCI integration such as on business type, capitalization, and years of operation. Conversely, factors such as the number of employees, ISO certification, and other type of CSR programs revealed to have no significant impact on GCI-based planning. To address these gaps, the paper proposes a "Competitiveness-based Corporate Social Responsibility Theory". This framework advocates for harmonizing CSR strategies with national competitiveness indicators to foster socio-economic development, address specific structural setbacks, and enhance long-term productivity for both the corporation and the nation. By aligning CSR with global competitiveness standards, companies can move beyond reactive philanthropy toward strategic initiatives that support sustainable national growth.
