Biased Social Attitudes and Cultural Domination Against Women in Kalidasa’s Abhijnanashakuntalam

Author(s) Dr. Priyanka Singh
Country India
Abstract Kalidasa’s Abhijnanashakuntalam is widely regarded as a masterpiece of classical Indian literature. While the play is celebrated for its poetic elegance and emotional richness, it also reflects the gendered realities of the society in which it was produced. This research paper explores how biased social attitudes and cultural domination shape the character and experiences of Shakuntala. Using feminist and cultural approaches, the study reveals how women are idealized yet restricted within patriarchal norms. The paper further argues that Shakuntala’s journey reflects both oppression and resilience, making the text relevant to contemporary discussions on gender inequality.
