Beyond Screen Time: Differential Impacts of Educational, Social, and Entertainment Media on Secondary Students' Academic Cognition

Abstract This systematic review and meta-analysis examined the effects of different types of media use on academic cognition of adolescent aged 11-18 years. findings showed that educational media had positive effects on verbal reasoning and academic performance, whereas social and entertainment media were associated with negative effects on attention, sleep and GPA. self-regulation emerged as an important protective factor, while lower socioeconomic status intensified negative outcomes . The study highlights that media type is more important than overall screen time and emphasizes the need for digital literacy and self-regulation skills to support adolescent digital health.
