| Abstract | The steel industry in Japan has made remarkable progress in reducing energy consumption over the past several decades, achieving one of the highest levels of energy efficiency in the world. Despite these advancements, there is an increasing demand for the development of innovative technologies to further enhance energy conservation. This need arises due to growing concerns related to energy security, fluctuating and often high energy prices, and the urgent requirement to reduce carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions in order to address global climate change. One of the most promising approaches to tackle these challenges is the effective utilization of waste heat generated during steel production processes. A significant portion of energy is lost as heat, particularly in the form of radiant heat from hot steel products, which has not been efficiently harnessed so far. Recovering and converting this waste heat into useful energy can greatly improve overall system efficiency. Thermoelectric generation has emerged as a viable and sustainable technology for this purpose. By converting temperature differences directly into electrical energy, thermoelectric systems can play a crucial role in enhancing energy recovery in steel plants. This paper focuses on the design and application of such systems in steelmaking processes. |
