Multidisciplinary Management of Lumbosacral Spina Bifida in Neonate: A Case Report from Manyara Regional Referral Hospital, Tanzania

Abstract Spina bifida is a congenital neural tube defect that results from incomplete closure of the embryonic neural tube during early fetal development. Myelomeningocele is the most severe form and is commonly associated with neurological impairment and hydrocephalus. This case report describes the management of a neonate diagnosed with lumbosacral myelomeningocele associated with hydrocephalus at a Regional Referral Hospital in Tanzania.
A seven-day-old male neonate was referred from a district hospital presenting with a cystic swelling over the lower back since birth. Clinical examination revealed a 6 cm × 5 cm lumbosacral swelling with cerebrospinal fluid leakage, lower limb weakness, and poor anal tone. Cranial ultrasound demonstrated moderate hydrocephalus. The patient underwent surgical repair of the myelomeningocele and received prophylactic antibiotics and supportive neonatal care. Follow-up evaluation showed satisfactory wound healing and improvement in clinical condition.
This case highlights the importance of early diagnosis, timely referral, multidisciplinary management, and preventive maternal folic acid supplementation in reducing complications associated with spina bifida in resource-limited settings.
