Abstract Abstract:
Catheter-related infection is a common complication of vascular catheter use for hemodialysis (HD), with a reported incidence of 1.1 to 6.1 episodes per 1,000 catheter-days. It is associated with significant morbidity and mortality, with a risk of death three times higher than in patients without infection.
Pseudomonas aeruginosa endocarditis is a rare form of infective endocarditis but with very high morbidity and mortality. We report the case of a 54-year-old chronic dialysis patient with a catheter in place for more than a year who presented with septic shock and a positive catheter culture for Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
