| Abstract | The ability to use and understand vocabulary effectively was a crucial component of language proficiency. Vocabulary served as the foundation for communication, comprehension, and expression, enabling learners to engage in meaningful conversations, comprehend complex texts, and produce coherent written documents. However, many students struggled with vocabulary acquisition, which affected their ability to understand and use the English language fluently. In the context of Grade 1 learners at Calabanga Central Division Pilot School for the School Year 2023-2024, it was observed that their English vocabulary skills were significantly limited, particularly due to the predominance of the mother tongue as the medium of instruction in the early grades. This challenge necessitated an intervention that systematically enhanced their vocabulary acquisition and application. This action research aimed to improve the vocabulary skills of Grade 1 learners by implementing Project BEE (Building English Excellence), a strategic and innovative vocabulary enhancement program. The study specifically sought to answer the following research questions: (a) What were the pre-test vocabulary scores of the pupils before the intervention? (b) What was the level of effectiveness of the contextualized strategy in improving the vocabulary skills of the pupils? (c) What were the post-test vocabulary scores of the respondents after the contextualized strategy was introduced? The study aimed to address the vocabulary gap by increasing learners' proficiency from 23% to at least 80% through a structured and engaging intervention program. |
