Abstract We evaluated liver enzyme and bilirubin changes in 50 hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg)-positive individuals. Blood samples were collected aseptically, HBsAg was confirmed by test, and aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), total bilirubin, and direct bilirubin were measured using an automated analyzer. Data were recorded and analyzed statistically. Most HBsAg-positive participants showed elevated AST and ALT, indicating hepatocellular injury. Some also had increased total and direct bilirubin. ALT levels were higher than AST levels in these participants. These findings suggest that hepatitis B infection is associated with altered liver function markers and bilirubin levels in HBsAg-positive patients. Clinicians should monitor liver function tests in such patients to detect and assess the extent of hepatic involvement early.
