The Effect Of Hatha Yoga Practices On The Different Lobes of the Human Brain: A Narrative Review Study

| Abstract | This review study examines the physiological and anatomical changes induced in the human brain by consistent Hatha yoga practice, based on a comprehensive analysis of literature from databases such as PubMed and Google Scholar. Hatha yoga is recognised as a potent mind-body intervention that produces measurable effects on brain structure, function, and neurochemistry, engaging multiple neural networks through a combination of physical postures, breath control, and meditation. In the frontal lobe, yoga has been shown to enhance executive functions, including attention, processing speed, memory, and decision-making, with some evidence indicating a stronger impact on right hemispheric functions. Within the parietal lobe, regular practice is associated with increased grey matter volume in regions such as the superior parietal lobule, which is crucial for voluntary attention and interoceptive awareness, suggesting specialised neural processing strategies. Memory formation and emotion control are supported by the temporal lobe's substantial hippocampus volume expansion and increased grey matter in the frontal brain and amygdala. According to MRI studies, yoga increases the volume of the primary visual cortex (V1) and improves spatial awareness in the occipital lobe, which is responsible for attentional control and information processing. Overall, regular yoga practice improves functional connectivity within important brain networks, which helps with attention and emotional balance. It is also linked to increasing grey matter in areas linked to memory, emotional control, and interception. Furthermore, yoga lowers cortisol and modifies neurotransmitter levels, including GABA, which supports neuroplasticity and cognitive function. In the end, this promotes relaxation, stress reduction, and general cognitive and emotional well-being. |
