| Abstract | Medical education has traditionally been imparted predominantly through the English language in many countries across the world. While English has become the global language of scientific communication and medical literature, a large proportion of medical students originate from vernacular or regional language backgrounds. For many such students, language barriers create difficulties in comprehension, communication, academic confidence, and conceptual understanding during medical training. In recent years, increasing attention has therefore been directed toward the role of vernacular medium education in improving accessibility, inclusivity, comprehension, and healthcare delivery. Vernacular medium in medical education refers to the use of regional or native languages as supportive or primary mediums for teaching-learning processes in medical institutions. Teaching complex medical concepts in students’ mother tongue or regional language can enhance understanding, reduce psychological stress, improve retention, and facilitate more effective interaction between teachers and students. It also enables future healthcare professionals to communicate efficiently with patients belonging to local communities, thereby strengthening doctor–patient relationships and improving healthcare outcomes. The use of vernacular languages in medical education offers several educational and social advantages including inclusive learning, improved academic participation, better conceptual clarity, increased rural representation, and enhanced patient communication. However, implementation of vernacular medical education also presents important challenges such as lack of standardized medical terminology, limited educational resources, scarcity of translated textbooks, difficulties in scientific communication, and concerns regarding global academic competitiveness. The present article discusses the role, advantages, challenges, and future perspectives of vernacular medium in medical education and highlights its importance in promoting equitable, student-centered, and socially responsive healthcare education. The article emphasizes that balanced integration of vernacular support with English proficiency may provide the most effective strategy for advancing medical education and healthcare services. |
