Abstract The rapid advancement of digital technology has transformed the landscape of medical education worldwide. Virtual teaching, also referred to as online or digital learning, has emerged as an important educational strategy that enables teaching and learning through electronic platforms, internet-based resources, virtual classrooms, and multimedia technologies. The significance of virtual teaching increased enormously during the global COVID-19 pandemic, when medical institutions across the world adopted online learning methods to ensure continuity of education despite social restrictions and closure of campuses.
Virtual teaching offers several educational advantages, including flexibility, accessibility, time efficiency, wider reach, and integration of multimedia learning tools. It enables students to access lectures, digital resources, virtual simulations, recorded sessions, and online assessments from any location. Modern virtual teaching platforms facilitate interactive learning through animations, videos, three-dimensional models, virtual dissections, and digital collaboration tools. Such innovations have enhanced the learning experience and encouraged self-directed and technology-assisted education in medical sciences.
However, despite its numerous benefits, virtual teaching also presents several challenges and limitations in medical education. Lack of direct patient interaction, reduced practical and clinical exposure, limited hands-on skill training, decreased teacher–student interaction, technological barriers, internet connectivity issues, and prolonged screen exposure may negatively affect learning outcomes and professional development. Subjects requiring practical demonstrations, cadaveric dissection, clinical bedside teaching, and psychomotor skill acquisition are particularly difficult to teach effectively through purely virtual methods.
The present article discusses the advantages and disadvantages of virtual teaching in medical education and highlights its educational impact, limitations, and future role in competency-based medical training. The article emphasizes that although virtual teaching has become an invaluable educational tool, it should complement rather than completely replace traditional classroom, clinical, and practical teaching methods.
