| Abstract | Assessment forms an integral component of medical education and plays a crucial role in evaluating the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and professional competencies of medical students. In recent years, internal assessment has emerged as an essential educational tool in competency-based medical education because it promotes continuous learning, regular academic engagement, and holistic student development. Unlike traditional university examinations that evaluate performance at the end of the academic year, internal assessment provides periodic evaluation throughout the learning process and enables timely feedback, academic improvement, and self-reflection among students. Internal assessment includes various methods such as written examinations, practical assessments, viva voce, assignments, seminars, attendance evaluation, objective structured practical examinations (OSPE), objective structured clinical examinations (OSCE), case presentations, and formative assessments. These methods help educators assess not only cognitive knowledge but also communication skills, professionalism, ethical behavior, teamwork, and clinical competencies. Continuous evaluation encourages students to maintain consistent study habits and reduces dependence on last-minute examination preparation. Despite its numerous advantages, internal assessment also presents certain challenges and limitations. Concerns regarding subjectivity, examiner bias, variability in assessment standards, academic stress, excessive testing, and administrative workload have been raised by students and educators alike. Inadequate transparency and lack of uniformity may occasionally affect the reliability and validity of internal assessment systems. The present article discusses the educational importance, advantages, disadvantages, and future relevance of internal assessment in medical education. It also highlights the need for fair, objective, transparent, and competency-based assessment strategies to ensure effective evaluation of future healthcare professionals. |
