Highlighting the need for AI technology in the Islamic banking sector: A case study of Bank Syariah Indonesia

Author(s) Dr. Manoj R
Country India
Abstract Islamic banking, an alternative economy based on interest-free banking, has gained popularity in Muslim-majority regions like the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and Africa. It emphasizes risk sharing, ethical investments, and asset-backed financing, requiring AI support to improve efficiency. The global Islamic finance industry, worth over $2 trillion, is expanding due to increased demand for Sharia-compliant products, regulatory frameworks, and innovative financial instruments. This sector plays a critical role in promoting inclusive economic development and bridging the global divide between financial services and ethical investment principles. AI-backed sales promotion in the banking sector, particularly in the emerging Islamic banking sector, addresses security, speed, and client experience concerns. AI applications use advanced data analysis for strategic decisions, providing 24-hour customer support, detecting fraudulent activity, and improving credit scoring and risk management. Robotic Process Automation reduces costs and errors. Bank Syariah Indonesia, a key player in Indonesia's Islamic banking sector, has demonstrated robust growth and resilience since its merger. It provides Sharia-compliant financial services, including savings, investments, and financing, catering to the Muslim population. Artificial intelligence can reduce profit and loss sharing (PLS) risks in Islamic banking. Mudarabah contracts require continuous monitoring of business performance, requiring thorough analysis of customer performance history and prospects. AI technology can help banks make informed decisions and ensure business ventures through Mudarabah.
