| Abstract | Abstract: The Bonda tribe, recognized as one of the Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs) of Odisha, has long preserved cultural identity marked by clan-based social organization, oral traditions, unique dress practices and subsistence livelihoods. In recent decades, expanding access to formal education, wage employment, state welfare schemes and media exposure has intensified their interaction with mainstream society. The present paper seeks to examine the factors of socio-ecomic conditions as well as the impact of modernization and external influences on cultural practices of Bonda tribe. The research was conducted in selected villages of Khairput Block over a period of six months from November 2024 to April 2025, covering a sample of 120 households through surveys, interviews and focus group discussions. Findings indicate persistent educational deprivation, especially among women, alongside subsistence livelihoods and seasonal migration. Modernization has improved access to healthcare and markets but has accelerated cultural erosion, including language loss and decline of traditional institutions. The study emphasizes the need for culturally sensitive and participatory development approaches. |
