Abstract Abstract.
Traumatic central cord syndrome (TCCS) is the most frequently encountered incomplete spinal cord injury resulting in neurological deficit .The deficit is symmetrical, commonly incomplete quadriplegia affecting the upper limbs more than the lower limbs. Sensory impairment is variable and urinary retention is common. TCCS is usually seen after a traumatic event which results in hyperextension of the cervical spine more so in elderly patients with spondylosis.
Below is a case of a 54 year old male who presented to casualty with history of neck pain following a fall while drunk, 7 days prior to admission. He had weakness in upper and lower limbs but intact bladder and bowel sphincter control. Cervical spine radiographs and MRI were ordered and a diagnosis of central cord syndrome was made. He successfully underwent decompression with coperctomy and was discharged five days later in a cervical brace.
