Abstract The rapid expansion of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies has significantly altered the nature of academic research and knowledge creation in higher education institutions. AI-powered systems are increasingly being utilized for literature review, content drafting, data analysis, reference management, and research communication. Although these technologies improve research speed and efficiency, growing dependency on AI-generated outputs has raised important concerns regarding originality, critical inquiry, intellectual independence, and ethical research behavior. The present conceptual paper explores the relationship between human intelligence and Artificial Intelligence in higher education research and emphasizes the need for a balanced and human-centered research ecosystem. The paper critically examines the opportunities, limitations, and long-term implications of AI-assisted academic practices through recent literature and theoretical perspectives. The study argues that while AI can support academic productivity and innovation, it cannot replace human cognitive abilities such as critical reasoning, ethical judgment, creativity, contextual interpretation, and emotional understanding. The paper proposes a balanced framework where AI functions as a collaborative research assistant while human intelligence remains central to scholarly decision-making and intellectual inquiry. The study further recommends ethical AI governance, faculty AI literacy, and critical-thinking-oriented academic policies to ensure responsible integration of AI technologies in higher education research systems.
