Branch Expansion vs. Digital Outreach: Drivers of Retail Deposit Growth for Indian Private Banks

Author(s) Mr. Mayank Choudhary

Abstract The Indian banking sector is undergoing a structural transformation driven by the simultaneousexpansion of physical branch networks and the rapid proliferation of digital banking platforms.Against the backdrop of a persistent credit–deposit mismatch—where credit growth hasconsistently outpaced deposit mobilization by approximately four to five percentage pointsduring FY2021–25—this study empirically investigates which channel more effectively drivesretail deposit growth, and in particular Current Account and Savings Account (CASA)
accumulation, in Indian private sector banks.Adopting a positivist, deductive research approach, the study employs secondary financial datafrom ten banks across the public, private, and small finance bank categories over the period
FY2021 to FY2025. Correlation analysis, simple linear regression, CASA ratio impactassessment, and cross-bank comparative analysis constitute the primary analytical tools. Theregression model reveals an R² of 0.0004 and a p-value of 0.885, confirming that deposit scalealone is not a statistically significant predictor of deposit performance. Correlation findings, however, indicate a 93% dependency between branch count and deposit growth, underscoringthe continued relevance of physical infrastructure. The study's key finding is that while digital channels enhance deposit velocity, transactionalefficiency, and customer acquisition at scale, they concurrently accelerate fund outflows
toward higher-yield instruments—thereby eroding CASA stickiness. By contrast, physicalbranch networks remain anchors of trust, relationship management, and high-value depositretention. The data validates neither channel as singularly superior, instead pointing toward anintegrated "Phygital" model—combining digital reach with branch-anchored depth—as themost effective paradigm for sustainable liability franchise growth in the Indian bankingcontext.
