Author(s) Arup Sarma
Country India
Abstract Literature, social justice and empowerment always share a profound connection. Beyond its aesthetic component, literature produced against the backdrop of socio-political, cultural, historical conditions respond to the call of democracy when democratic ideals are in danger. Protest movements, movements for socio-political justice of various ethnic/tribal groups in India's Northeast and their presence in literary texts invite fresh reading strategies. The most dominant scholarly attention is already drawn to the Postcolonial Studies/Subaltern Studies in interpreting literary texts produced in Northeast. Writers from Assam, Meghalaya and from other states of Northeast are still continuing relentless fight for justice of all sorts and empowerment of the people due to the onslaught of globalization and neo-colonial forces. In doing so, they hardly evoke the voices of messiah like B. R. Ambedkar and his ideals. The paper argues that the voices of Ambedkar can be understood with strong relevance to the study of Northeast Indian literature for social justice and empowerment of the marginalized communities. The study opens up a fresh academic avenue to study some selected literary texts in Northeast India under the insights/perspectives of B.R Ambedkar.
Keywords literature, social justice, empowerment, Northeast, globalization, neo-colonial forces
