| Abstract | Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as a revolutionary technology in environmental governance and monitoring. AI-enabled various tools like remote sensing, satellite imaging, predictive analytics, drones, smart sensors, and machine learning algorithms are increasingly being used to control the pollution, climate monitoring and conservation of biodiversity, waste management, and disaster prediction. These technologies assist to increase the efficiency, accuracy and speed of environmental monitoring systems. However, with the installation of AI in environmental governance also raises significant regulatory and ethical concerns relating to privacy, transparency, accountability, algorithmic bias, data protection, and environmental justice. The absence of a comprehensive legal framework governing AI-based environmental systems in India creates regulatory uncertainty. This paper critically examines the role of AI in environmental monitoring, analyses the opportunities and challenges associated with its use, and evaluates the adequacy of existing legal mechanisms in India. This paper further discusses about the recent judicial decisions and proposes suggestions for developing a balanced regulatory framework ensuring sustainable and ethical AI governance. |
