| Abstract | Public infrastructure projects play a significant role in regional development by generating both positive and negative externalities. This study examines the comparative effects of the bypass road in Kozhikode District, Kerala, on the local population and economy. The findings reveal that the positive externalities of the bypass road outweigh its negative externalities. Major positive impacts include improved transportation efficiency, reduced travel time, enhanced connectivity, increased business opportunities, and a decline in traffic congestion and road accidents in certain areas. Although some negative effects such as environmental concerns, noise pollution, and displacement of a few economic activities were reported, their overall impact was relatively limited. The study concludes that the bypass road has contributed significantly to socio-economic development and public welfare in the region. Effective planning and management can further reduce the remaining negative externalities and enhance the long-term benefits of the project. |
