Abstract Millets are increasingly recognized for their resilience to climate change, high nutritional value, and contributions to food security, sustainable farming, and healthy lifestyles. Despite strong governmental backing and rising awareness, their integration into urban diets remains minimal. This research explores the perceptions and consumption habits of millets and millet-based products among urban residents in Chennai, focusing on awareness levels, income disparities, and behavioural factors affecting consumption.
An empirical research design was adopted using primary data collected from 116 millet-consuming respondents through a structured questionnaire. The data was analysed using descriptive statistics and inferential tools such as Friedman Rank Test, One-Way ANOVA, correlation and regression analysis with the help of SPSS.
The results indicate that awareness of different millet types varies, with little millet being the most familiar and finger millet the least. Income significantly affects millet consumption, highlighting economic disparities. Consumer perceptions are positively influenced by factors such as awareness, purchasing habits, consumption patterns, and reasons for not consuming. The study concludes that experiential factors are more influential than mere awareness in shaping urban consumers' views on millets. The findings highlight the need for behaviour-focused interventions, innovative millet-based products, transparent marketing, and policy support to encourage regular millet consumption and integrate them sustainably into urban diets.
