Abstract The concept of environment management is not new to the tribal society. All the tribal societies of North-East-India have traditionally adapted management and sustainability of enssvironment as a part of their life. The Eco-friendly life and living of the tribal communities reflect their awareness towards protection, conservation and judicious use of natural resources. These considerations are implicit in tribal community psyche and perception. Community consciousness towards environment is also visible in their festivities like Ali-ai –Ligang and Porag of the Mishings, Bathou festival of Bodos, Jonbeel and Borot utsav of Tiwa, Rongke of Karbi etc. In fact, the concept of environment management is new only to non-tribal society that too advocated under compulsion. Present day environmental degradation in India needs a deep introspection into the tribal socio-environmental models to evolve a workable strategy for sustenance and management of environment. It is in this context, the perception of the Mishing community towards sustenance and management of environment is studied. The paper highlights on the social traits of the Mishing community in exploiting forest resources, water resources and in selecting eco-friendly habitat. The study pertaining to this work intends to present a management inputs for deriving workable modalities applicable to all. It is imperative that in giving a final shape to environment management and sustainability, the concept of all the tribal communities of N-E-India who are far more advanced in this regard need to be considered in addition to the Mishing community.
