Ear as a Mirror of Kidney Health: Shalakya Tantra Perspective on Reno-Auditory Correlation

Author(s) Bhoomitkumar Hiteshbhai Dabhee, Dr. R. S. Unadkat
Country India
Abstract Background: Despite their different anatomical sites, the ear and the kidney exhibit deep physiological and structural parallels that suggest a distinct reno-auditory axis. Shalakya Tantra—the Ayurvedic specialty focused on supraclavicular diseases (Urdhvajatrugata Vikara)—has long identified clinical links between these systems through the view of Mutravaha srotas and Karnendriya.
Objective: This narrative review possesses classical Ayurvedic concepts with contemporary science regarding the Ear and Kidney relation axis, detailing shared similar membrane structures, cellular transport mechanisms and the high incidence of particular sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) in renal disease.
Methods: Literature was compiled from classical texts (Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, Ashtanga Hridayam) and peer-reviewed biomedical databases (PubMed/MEDLINE) focusing on cochlear ion pathways, chronic kidney disease (CKD) and Alport syndrome.
Results: The reno-auditory relationship is driven by shared biological features: Na-K ATPase-dependent pumps, Type-IV collagen basement membranes and delicate microvascular networks vulnerable to systemic metabolic shifts. Clinically, CKD correlates with a 40–70% prevalence of particularly high-frequency SNHL and a pattern mirrored genetically by Alport syndrome.
Conclusion: Audiological assessments should be done in nephrology protocols. Integrating Shalakya Tantra diagnostics and therapeutics offers a viable, holistic approach to mitigating secondary otological damage in renal patients.
