The Intra-articular Knee Injuries and Associated Factors among Patients Attending Muhimbili Orthopaedic Institute MRI Unit

Abstract Background: Knee joint injuries account for 10% to 25% sports related injuries and most commonly involve the intra-articular compartment. Intra-articular knee injuries are associated with significant morbidity and can threaten sportsman careers. Intra-articular knee injuries have been studied extensively all over the world. However, in Tanzania there are few studies done on knee injuries.
Objective: The aim of this study is to determine the proportion of intra-articular knee injuries and associated factors among patients with knee trauma attending MOI MRI unit.
Methodology: This was a hospital based descriptive retrospective study conducted by collecting clinical information and imaging findings from patients’ records at MOI. 142 eligible study participants with knee injuries who underwent knee MRI at MOI from January 2020 to June 2021 were enrolled.  Obtained data were filled in the structured investigation tool. Data analysis was done using SPSS version 23 and summarized using tables and figures. Categorical variables were summarized using mean and standard deviation. Chi-square test was used to test the statistical significance of association between intra-articular knee injuries with fall from height, MTA and sports related knee injuries
Results: In this study, intra-articular knee injuries occurred in 81% of the patients, mostly meniscal tear (71.8%) and lateral meniscal tear (54.2%)
Intra-articular knee injuries occurred more in males (60%) and middle-aged person and less common in MTA (60% vs 40%, p-value=0.069)
Cruciate ligament tear and anterior cruciate ligament tear was significant associated more in male sex (51.2% vs24.2%, p-value=0.001) and sports (55.6% vs 34.0%, p-value=0.022) related injuries
Meniscal and medial meniscal tear were significantly more common in middle aged
Fall from height was significant not associated with cruciate ligament tear and anterior cruciate ligament tear (27.1% vs 48.2%, p-value=0.011)
MTA was significant associated with posterior cruciate ligament tear and less associated with lateral meniscal tear (13.6% vs 48.2%, p- value=0.043)
Conclusion: In this study, intra-articular knee injuries occurred in 81% of the patients, mostly meniscal tear (71.8%) and lateral meniscal tear
