Employment Distribution in Textile Industry of India: A Spatial Econometric Approach

Author(s) Ms. Debarati Pal, Prof. Panchanan Das
Country India
Abstract This study employs a modified version of the Ellison and Glaeser (EG) index to examine the agglomeration patterns of the Indian textile industry. First, the spatial distribution of textile manufacturing, measured in terms of industrial employment for the years 2001 and 2022 using factory-level data from the Annual Survey of Industries (ASI). Second, the modified EG index is estimated to assess the extent to which natural advantages and agglomeration spillovers influence firms’ location choices, thereby contributing to spatial concentration or agglomeration. Finally, a spatial panel model is estimated within a spatial econometric framework to identify the key determinants shaping the locational decisions of textile firms.
