Plant-Derived Biosurfactants from Butea monosperma in Food Preservation: Recent Advances, Opportunities and Challenges.

| Abstract | The demand for natural and sustainable food preservation has increased significantly in recent year. This growing demand can potentially be addressed through the use of plant derived biosurfactanat .Biosurfactanat derived from medicinal plant. Biosurfactants derived from medicinal plants possess amphiphilic properties, exhibit antimicrobial activity, and are biodegradable, making them a potential alternative to synthetic preservatives. Butea monosperma, commonly known as Flame of the Forest or Palash, contains several bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, glycosides, and saponins. These compounds have potential applications in food preservation through edible coatings, antimicrobial packaging, and emulsification systems. Recent studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of Butea monosperma extracts in inhibiting food-borne pathogens and improving the shelf life of fresh produce. Additionally, the incorporation of plant extracts into edible films and coatings has shown promising results in reducing oxidation and microbial growth. However, challenges such as extraction efficiency, standardization, toxicity assessment, and large-scale commercialization remain significant barriers. This review discusses the sources, extraction, functional properties, and recent advances in the application of Butea monosperma-derived biosurfactants in food preservation, along with their opportunities and challenges. |
