A Case Study on Ayurvedic Management in PCOS

Abstract Female reproductive system consists of hypothalamo-pitutary-ovarian axis and intact uterine-adnexa which maintain complex mechanism. In human body all the system are interrelated to function properly, any in one system may cause multi system pathogenesis. Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrinopathy which is multifactorial and polygenic condition manifested as Oligovulation or Anovulation, signs of Hypoandrogenism & multiple small ovarian cysts. It became a lifestyle disorder nowadays because of sedentary lifestyle habits, eating habits, eating unhealthy packaged foods, stressful environment. The exact cause of PCOS is unknown but high level of insulin, hyperandrogenism & LH are the main factors. The symptoms of PCOS are delayed menstruation, oligomenorrhoea, acne, hirsutism, thinning of hairs, obesity & constipation. The symptoms, sign vary person to person. In ayurveda it includes three Doshas, Dhatus like Rasa, Raktha & Medas. The strothas involves in this condition are Rasa, Rakta, Arthva Saha srothas (mainly Arthva Saha srothas) some features manifests like Anarthava(Amenorrhea), Vandhyathwa, Pusphghani Abeeja rituchakra (Anovular bleeding). Here is a case presented with irregular menstruation, unwanted rapidly hair growth(hirsutism) with stress. On USG she was detected to have bilateral PCOS pattern. Based on the clinical features the treatment principles adopted were Amapachana, Kphapittahar & Arthva Janana. After 3 months of internal medication & Yoga & lifestyle modification symptoms reduced markedly, mensuration was normal and USG report was normal.
