Abstract Education is universally recognized as a key catalyst for social change, especially in impoverished and indigenous groups. The power dynamics in tribal-dominated areas, such as Odisha state, deeply impact education and social mobility in light of historical deprivation, poverty, low literacy levels, and socio-cultural barriers.
Over the past few decades, Self-Help Groups (SHGs) have emerged as one of the most potent components for grassroots institutional development, covering not just financial inclusion but also educational awareness, collective learning, and social empowerment. This article examines tribal SHGs as one of many possible paths education can adjust to catalyse social transformation in the Rayagada district. This descriptive and analytical study, based on secondary data supplemented by field-level observations and the available literature, delves into SHGs as governance spaces of education where tribal women gather regularly to support literacy dissemination in their localities through these informal citizenship networks, receive motivational messages about school enrolment, and socio-political consciousness. Education facilitated by SHGs is an important vehicle for the creation of self-confidence, leadership development, gender equity, and participatory community affairs.
Though SHGs face several obstacles such as infrastructural inadequacies, language problems, and resistance from the patriarchal order, they show much promise in transforming social relations and empowering marginalised sections of society. The present study indicates that policy interventions are needed to establish linkages between SHGs and the broader educational and developmental ecosystem, thereby enhancing the growth of inclusive, transformative education in tribal regions.
