Beyond Coding Constraints: Treating Salesforce Governor Limits as First-Class Architectural Design Inputs

| Abstract | Salesforce governor limits are typically introduced to developers as platform restrictions to be aware of and avoided during coding. This framing, while practical for individual feature development, produces a critical blind spot at the architectural level: systems designed without governor limits as foundational inputs routinely pass sandbox testing and fail under production load. This paper argues for a fundamental reframing of governor limits from coding constraints to architectural design inputs, presenting a practitioner framework derived from production experience across multiple enterprise Salesforce implementations. The paper documents five governor limit categories that most significantly influence system architecture, describes the failure modes each produces when not considered architecturally, and presents the design patterns that emerge when these limits are treated as first-class constraints from the first design decision. The patterns presented include asynchronous execution context sequencing, Platform Event-based transaction boundary management, Queueable chain depth budgeting, bulk-safe SOQL and DML design, and payload chunking strategies for heap-constrained processing. Each pattern is illustrated with a real failure scenario and its architectural resolution. |
