Educational Challenges and Learning Inequalities among Tea Tribe Students in Assam: Determinants and Interventions for Better Educational Development

Abstract The bedrock for socio-economic prosperity and empowerment of the ignored groups is education. Assam’s Tea Tribe group is one of the most socio-economically deprived population however the extent of education achieved by students of this tribe still remains a source of worry. In this review study, we critically examine the elements responsible for the deteriorating academic performance of Tea Tribe children and explore various approaches of improving educational outcomes.The study has employed a holistic research methodology to examine the existing literature, official records, educational statistics, policy documents and academic publications on the education of the Tea Tribe in Assam. The review says student performance is affected by a variety of interrelated factors like poverty, parental illiteracy, poor educational infrastructure, lack of competent teachers, lack of coaching and academic support facilities, poor digital connectivity, limited access to educational resources, language barriers, low educational awareness and socio-cultural constraints. Also, physical remoteness of many tea garden villages and absence of adequate career guidance facilities still work as deterrents to the educational aspirations of the youth.
