Ecophysiological Studies of Some Selected Arid Zone Plants

| Abstract | When a plant is subjected to any biotic and abiotic stress factors, the first observed response is a decrease in its normal metabolic activities, with a consequent reduction of growth. In this alarm phase, protein synthesis is one of the most negatively affected anabolic processes (Bohnert and Jensen, 1996), together with photosynthesis, transport of metabolites and uptake & translocation of ions (Hsiao, 1973; Larcher, 1995; Lichtenthaler, 1996). Plants are usually immobile, and they cannot run away from the unfavourable environmental conditions, therefore, in order to overcome this problem, they have evolved a number of strategies to survive under stressful conditions. They have to face them and make necessary adjustments in their morphology, physiology and behaviour to ensure their survival to the extent possible. Therefore, eco-physiological study is a useful step in the study of adaptability, variability and evaluation of a plant species. The present study is aimed to obtain a better understanding of adaptive mechanism in Prosopis cineraria, Salvadora persica and Tecomella undulata under harsh desertic environments and how far the environmental factors influence the metabolic processes and their products during different months. Monthly fluctuations in leaf pigments, chlorophyll stability index, protein, sugar and proline contents are main points of interest in the present studies. |
