Agri-entrepreneurship: A Huge Potential Waiting to be Untapped

Author(s) Dr. B. Thirumalesh
Country India
Abstract Agriculture has historically constituted the backbone of India’s economy and continues to sustain a large proportion of its population. Despite rapid industrialisation and the expansion of the services sector, agriculture remains central to employment generation, food security, and rural livelihoods. However, the sector faces persistent structural challenges such as fragmented landholdings, low productivity, inadequate value addition, post-harvest losses, weak infrastructure, and limited access to markets. These issues have contributed to stagnating farm incomes and growing rural distress.
In this context, Agri-entrepreneurship has emerged as a transformative approach capable of revitalising the rural economy. It involves the integration of agricultural production with processing, packaging, branding, marketing, and innovation, thereby enabling farmers to capture greater value from their produce. This paper examines the concept, scope, and significance of Agri-entrepreneurship in India and evaluates its potential as a catalyst for rural transformation. Drawing upon secondary data from policy reports, institutional publications, and development studies, the paper highlights the role of value addition, market integration, institutional support, and technological adoption in promoting Agri-enterprises.
The study concludes that Agri-entrepreneurship offers a viable pathway for enhancing farmers’ income, generating employment, reducing rural-urban migration, and ensuring sustainable and inclusive development. However, realising this potential requires coordinated efforts in policy implementation, capacity building, financial inclusion, and infrastructure development.
