| Abstract | The launch of the Startup India initiative on January 16, 2016, marked a transformative phase in India’s economic landscape by fostering a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship. Over the past decade, India has emerged as one of the fastest-growing startup ecosystems globally, with more than 2.12 lakh startups recognized by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) as of early 2026. These startups have significantly contributed to employment generation, Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth, and technological advancement across sectors such as fintech, healthcare, agriculture, education, and e-commerce. Indian startups have revolutionised digital payments, strengthened financial inclusion, enhanced healthcare accessibility, and modernised supply chain systems. They have also played a vital role in promoting women entrepreneurship and regional economic development. Despite these achievements, the ecosystem faces several challenges, including limited penetration in deep technology sectors, dependence on foreign investments, regulatory complexities, and high failure rates. This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of India’s startup ecosystem by examining its evolution, key stakeholders, sectoral contributions, policy framework, opportunities, and challenges. It concludes that while India has made remarkable progress, strengthened innovation capabilities and fostered domestic investment are essential for achieving sustainable growth and the vision of Viksit Bharat. |
