Entrepreneurial Growth in Srikakulam District: An Analysis of Opportunities and Challenges

| Abstract | Entrepreneurship plays a vital role in regional economic development, employment generation, and industrial diversification. Srikakulam district in Andhra Pradesh, though historically considered economically backward, has gradually witnessed entrepreneurial activity through the growth of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), traditional industries, and government-supported startup initiatives. This research paper examines the entrepreneurial landscape of Srikakulam, a coastal district currently undergoing transition from a traditional agrarian economy to a more diversified industrial base. Employing a mixed-methods approach utilizing secondary data from the District Industries Centre (DIC) and qualitative thematic analysis, the study identifies the primary catalysts and inhibitors of business growth in this "peripheral entrepreneurship" context. The analysis reveals that the primary opportunities lie in the "Three P's": Processing (specifically cashew and coconut value addition), Pharma (leveraging the Pydibhimavaram industrial cluster), and Ports (with the development of Bhavanapadu/Mulapeta port). The district's strategic location on the NH-16 corridor provides a logistical advantage for export-oriented units. However, these opportunities are countered by significant challenges, including a "brain drain" of skilled youth to neighbouring Visakhapatnam, inadequate credit penetration for micro-enterprises, and a lack of sophisticated incubation infrastructure. The findings suggest that while government schemes like PMFME and PMEGP have increased the quantity of startups, the quality and sustainability of these ventures remain precarious. The paper concludes with a policy framework advocating for "Cluster-Based Entrepreneurship," suggesting that Srikakulam can bridge its developmental gap by integrating its rural agricultural surplus with high-tech processing units. |
