| Abstract | Non Word Repetition (NWR) performance predicts vocabulary growth and it allows individuals to efficiently encode, store and eventually integrate unfamiliar spoken words into their permanent mental lexicons. This process ultimately enhances overall communication skills. In NWR tasks, children with SLD have difficulty retaining phonetic information, whereas children with ASD has difficulties with hearing integration and speech motor planning. The present study examined the NWR performance of Malayalam speaking children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), children with Specific Learning Disorder (SLD) and compared it to TD children. The participants were divided into two age groups 5-6 years and 6-7 years. The results suggested that children with ASD performed poorly on the NWR task in both age groups than children with SLD and TD children. However, compared to the younger group (5–6 years), the older group (6-7 years) children performed better. Compared to TD peers, children with ASD and SLD both show marked impairments in NWR tasks. Speech Language Pathologists (SLPs) play a pivotal role in administering and analyzing NWR tasks utilizing them as culturally fair diagnostic tools to evaluate a child's core language processing infrastructure without the bias of prior vocabulary knowledge. |
