Environmental Knowledge and Environmental Attitude of Grade 8 Learners

Abstract A healthy environment often reflects the success of a country because it shows effective governance, sustainable development, and care for natural resources. This study examined Grade 8 learners’ environmental knowledge and attitudes across sex and program type. Environmental knowledge refers to the information individuals have on the state of the environment, specifically on the possible effects of human activities such as deforestation, pollution, introduction of invasive species, and solid waste management, on living things in an ecosystem. Environmental attitude refers to the beliefs, values, emotions, and behavioral predispositions a person holds toward environment and sustainability issues. The study used a descriptive-correlational research design, and data were collected from junior high school learners from a public secondary school. Results revealed that learners generally demonstrated moderate knowledge and average attitudes. Female learners showed slightly higher scores in both domains, though differences were not statistically significant. Program type, however, produced clear distinctions. Science, Technology, and Engineering (STE) learners exhibited the strongest knowledge but the least favorable attitudes, while Basic Education Curriculum (BEC) learners reflected lower knowledge yet stronger attitudes. Special Program for Foreign Language (SPFL) learners showed intermediate levels in both. A weak but significant negative correlation was found between knowledge and attitude, indicating that higher knowledge did not necessarily correspond to more positive values. These findings highlight the complexity of environmental education and underscore the importance of utilization of appropriate instructional materials, experiential learning, and psychosocial factors in shaping learners’ environmental perspectives.
