| Abstract | The position of women in politics has always been miserable. In pre-independence India, legal provisions made it difficult for women to participate actively in politics. There has been a drastic change in the area of women’s participation in politics, in India by the 73rd and 74th constitutional amendments. However, in Bihar as per provisions to providing equal opportunity, a large chunk of women was made to enter into political affairs at the grassroots level through 50 percent reservation of seats for women in 2006. Nevertheless, it has found that phenomenon of ‘proxy women leadership’ emerged. Male family members (their guardians) are even now handling the issue from behind the curtain and being rest as only proxy candidate, especially SC women representatives. Here, we discussed some typical trends and possible realities about women’s political participation at grassroots level especially in context of equal opportunity made by legal provisions to aim deepening democracy in village society of India, particularly in rural Bihar. |
